Wed, July 21, 2010 Press Release

MPE Motorsports, the home of 6-time Top Fuel world champion Clay Millican, has been conspicuously absent from competition in 2010. The lack of a full time sponsor has necessitated a break in the action for the team.
The year, however, has not been short of excitement for MPE. May 1, 2010 marked a true high water mark for the team. The only problem is the high water was the result of a severe flood that enveloped the MPE race shop. The true extent of the event has not been realized to date. There were personal vehicles as well as race vehicles involved, some of which were a total loss. The race shop was devastated by the flood waters. The offices, containing much of Clay’s championship memorabilia, and a source of tremendous pride, were inundated. The machine room, clutch room, and engine room received an unbelievable amount of damage that has required months of work to restore to working order. The good news is, the shop is back to functioning.
Clay’s wife Donna, who literally runs the show at MPE, has been working out of her garage for two and a half months and is finally settling back into her chair at the office.
In keeping with the competitive spirit of the team, the salvage work began immediately… some with the help of family, friends and fans. Team owner Mark Pickens expressed his gratitude for the community support, and his immense pride in the efforts put forth by the Team members. “I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of the hard work and sacrifice these guys have made, and continue to make to get us ready to go back on the track. I truly believe that the perseverance they have displayed is indicative of the championship mettle they possess. The truth is we can’t wait to get back out there running for championships where we belong.”
Clay has continued to do his television work and is actually in preparations for an upcoming show, details of which are forthcoming.
He has remained busy supporting son Dalton’s ATV motocross career, which is really taking off. Dalton’s competitive fire and nose for the front prove that the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree.
He has been getting in some valuable, albeit unsolicited work on his golf game. This should pay off when the charity golf tournaments beckon.
Mark and his Motorvation powered Top Sportsman GTO have had a successful start to the year as a follow-up to their National Top Sportsman Invitational win in Atlanta in 2009. Mark drove the car to the win at the NHRA DIV. 4 race in Tulsa, OK in June. This the fourth consecutive year that Mark’s Motorvation tuned cars have registered a win since joining the Top Sportsman wars. Tuned by Motorvation’s T.J. Tracey, the Goat was flawless throughout eliminations. “Anytime your car runs the number five straight passes, you better do your job at the tree or your guys are gonna be plenty upset”, Mark was quoted as saying.
Good things are on the horizon for Clay’s Top Fuel entry. MPE is in the process of active pursuit and negotiations with several sponsors for the 2011 season. “We can’t really talk specifics at this time, but we are really excited about the progress we are making”, said Clay. “You will definitely see us back out a few times in 2010, as we prepare for a full run in 2011.”
In the meantime, Mark’s Top Sportsman chase, Clay’s TV work, and T.J.’s bracket racing endeavors, along with his upcoming return to Top Sportsman racing with the much decorated orange ’63 Corvette should keep everyone plenty busy.
Please check back regularly for updates on Team MPE’s progress, and if you happen to see us at the races, please come by and say hello!

Securing playoff berth is Millican’s foremost goal at 55th U.S. NationalsOne race and three points separate Clay Millican from joining a select group of NHRA Top Fuel drivers in the final six races that will determine the 2009 Full Throttle Series championship.
Oh yeah, and then there’s Joe Hartley, the driver who has the same aspiration as Millican and is 11th, those three points behind the popular driver from Drummonds, Tenn.

Millican's 'fantastic day' brings
runner-up finish at Topeka
Clay Millican parlayed an important first-round
victory into one of his finest days at an NHRA race Sunday by
finishing a close second to Larry Dixon in the Top Fuel title round
of the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
It was Millican's fourth NHRA final and his first since May 2004.
His three round wins came at an important juncture in his bid to
capture a berth in the six-race Countdown to the Championship that
begins in September. He was 11th in points when the day began, 105
behind Joe Hartley, his first Sunday foe. Now, he is within 38
points (360-322).
'It was an awesome day at the track,' said Millican. 'Our car went
down the track on every run and we were very consistent with times
of 4.050, 4.026, 4.020 and 4.056 seconds. And we got a lot closer to
10th place in points.'
His 4.056-second time (293.41 mph), came against Dixon, who trailed
Millican off the starting line (.028-second to .064), but caught the
Hope4Sudan/Motorvation dragster with a 3.971 (301.74) closing effort
to take home the trophy.
'We decided before the finals that we didn't need to beat ourselves,
that we needed to do what got us there . . . and that's what we
did,' Millican said. 'Lance (Larsen, team crew chief) came up with a
tune-up that really works in the heat. We couldn't get much more
consistent than we were Sunday. The car was smooth as silk to drive.
'I drove the car the way I used to and had fun with it. But it was a
bit disappointing when I saw Larry's front wheels creep past my
windshield a little bit, and I knew he had the win. Our guys have
nothing to be ashamed of. I'm very proud of them. We needed a
performance like this really, really bad.
'We might not have turned on the win light, but it was still a great
day for us.' Millican had an excellent day driving, leaving the
starting line first on every run. He opened with a .064-second
reaction to Hartley's .122 and led all the way, stopping the
1,000-foot timer in 4.050 seconds at 299.93 mph to Hartley's 4.203
at 251.58
The popular driver from Drummonds, Tenn., made it two straight with
a resounding victory over nemesis Brandon Bernstein. Millican
unleashed a near-perfect .005 reaction and never looked back with a
4.026 at 295.46 to a 4.097 at 280.31. In the semifinals, rival Shawn
Langston's car couldn't back up after the burnout and Millican
soloed into the finals with a 4.020 at 299.00 mph.
Millican and the crew continue their quest for series points Friday
when the United Association Route 66 Nationals begins its three-day
run in Joliet. Ill.
